Cancer, Hurling, Travellers, Smoking

There was myself, the father, the mother, the little sister, the significant other, the cousin, the cousin's son, and we all crammed into our seats for Wexford against Kilkenny in the last round of the 2024 Leinster Senior hurling championship in Nowlan Park - oh, sorry, I mean UPMC Nowlan Park.

UPMC stands for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It's a U.S. health and insurance company which was originally set up by presbyterians. They own hospitals, clinics, sell insurance packages, have scores of actuaries, and turn over more money than many of the smaller island nations, presumably. They style themselves as a "Renowned International Healthcare Provider" with major cased initials just like that, and have operated in Ireland since 2006. Their yearly revenue in 2023 was reported as being 28 billion dollars, though there's is no public market capitalisation because they are legally and euphemistically what's called a "non-profit". 28 billion is an inconceivably large amount of anything, but to help you put it into perspective, it's a good few squillion more than you'd make if you'd ten lifetimes.

Regardless, the clock read 26th of May 2024 and there we were, hoping for an upset. Kilkenny have been dominated in recent years by Limerick, and we'd started to get our own back on Kilkenny a little bit for all the years they'd pushed us around under the legendary rule of Brian Cody.

Today was the 21st of February 2024, a Tuesday, and Julian Assange's legal team wrapped up their appeal - for the right to appeal properly - before the High Court. Up until now they've only laid their arguments out in the Magistrate's court - and, by all accounts, this is one of the most important cases of press freedom in the history of the free press, if not the most important.

If you've sat back and done nothing, fear not, you're in the company of most. A tiny minority have been courageous enough to stay on the case and keep fighting over the past ~13 years.
